In 1956, a US official in Afghanistan sent a note home reporting the “landing of flying saucer,” made of metal. They never figured out what happened to it, but four days later, the USSR invested $100m in the country, and it later leaked that "Thread-3" was a USSR program to reverse engineer UFOs.
